The Strand Christmas Quiz – The Answers

Back in December we posted a Christmas quiz from The Strand magazine from 1914. So here are the answers:

  1. The Louvain House

The numbers of the houses on each side will add up alike if the number of the house is 1 and there are no other houses, if the number is 6 and there are 8 houses, if the number is 35 and there are 49 houses, and if the number is 204 and there are 288 houses. We know that there were more than 50 but fewer than 500 houses, so the answer is 204.

  1. The Red Cross Puzzle

The illustration shows how to cut the cross into five pieces, so as to form two similar crosses, each of the same size. One cross is cut out whole, and the smaller figure shows how the remaining four pieces should be put together.

  1. Sinking the Fishing Boats

The diagram shows how the warship sinks all the fourty-nine boats in twelve straight courses, ending at the point from which it set out.

  1. Marching on City

The below table shows the best solution obtainable, with every division marching 82 miles.

We felt this quiz was very tricky so well done if you got some or all of the answers correct.
