20140314 [Le Jardin des Modes]This week our Photo Friday has been selected to celebrate Crufts which took place at the NEC in Birmingham last weekend, 6-9 March.

This year marked 123 years since the first Cruft’s show in 1891, and the best in show was Ricky, Ch/Am Ch Afterglow Maverick Sabre, entered in the Poodle (Standard) category under Mr J. & Mr J. & Mrs S. Our image is taken from the cover of the January 1928 edition of ‘Le Jardin des Modes’, and shows a woman with two greyhounds.  Le Jardin des Modes was established in 1922 as a monthly magazine by Lucien Vogel, who also founded La Gazette du Bon Ton, was art director with Vogue (1922-5), and established the magazine ‘Vu’ in 1928.

We hold this magazine from 1913 to 1983 (incomplete) in our Special Collections Periodicals.  Access to all material in our Special Collections is by arrangement with the LJMU Archivist
