Today marks the start of ‘Movember’, so we have selected a suitably moustachioed gentleman from within our Special Collections Fashion Periodicals.
The image comes from Men’s Wear in March 1974, and shows a male model wearing the latest ‘anti-freeze fashions’. The associated article advises that, “Fashions for fall radiate a feeling of the great outdoors via updated country looks in sophisticated sportswear and outerwear.” The model in this picture is wearing an unplucked nutria coat (Ben Kahn), leather gloves (Gates), and a scarf of 70/30 cashmere/wool (Pringle of Scotland), photograph by Ted Hardin.
Men’s Wear was an American Men’s fashion magazine published by Fairchild, re launched in 2010, and ceased in 2012, replaced by ‘M’. We hold only a few issues of this magazine from 1974 to 1976, but we do hold other mens’ fashion magazines such as L’Uomo Vogue (1970s-2013) within the collections.
All Special Collections periodicals are available on request through the LJMU Archivist in the Special Collections & American Studies Reading Room.
Liverpool University will be holding an exhibition in their reading room in honour of Movember from Monday 4th November. You can find out more on their blog from Monday.
